Philosophical Jewelry

Invent a piece of jewelry or clothing that when worn gives the wearer magical powers.  Explain the powers and abilities this talisman would allow you.  What types of things would you do with your new found abilities?

Please provide specific scenarios where the other philosophers in the class can see your supernatural talents in action.

If I could have any super power, I would choose to be able to teleport, whenever I want, wherever I want. I would do this by wearing a special piercing that gives me this power, so that it will always be on me and I will never lose it. This would preferably be in a place hidden by clothes, like a belly button ring, so that it will be a secret. It simplifies life immensely. There is the glamorous side, like teleporting into a bank vault to get rich or teleporting into a big fancy party filled with celebrities, such as the Grammy’s afterparty. But then there are the perks it would bring to basic life. You’d never be late for anything. Miss your bus? Wait until 7:25 and then teleport into school. Whenever you want to hang out with someone, you could just teleport into their homes. You’ll never be stuck at home on a snow day again. If you’re hungry, you could teleport into a restaurant and get food for free. Unlimited perks! Beyond this, it essentially ensures you a lifelong job without a college degree. If you aren’t interested in robbing people via teleport and living a life of crime, you could go to the CIA and apply for a job. Though you aren’t necessarily qualified, imagine how useful you could be to them. You could get rich from your job with the CIA, teleporting into enemy territory to gain intel or help fellow Americans. A single teleporting CIA agent could have prevented things like the Iranian Hostage Crisis, the failure of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and so many more issues that have occurred in history. Teleportation is practical, and would be both fun and help others beyond just myself.

If i were to choose one power to posses my whole life, I would choose the power of precognition by wearing a pair of glasses that allow me to look into my future. Although I won't necessarily be able to change what happens in the future, I'll know what is going to take place, and with that i'll be able to prepare myself for the following events. For example, with the most recent event at Douglass High school in Florida, with precognition I would have been able to let the school know that a shooting was going to take place, or at the least convince them to stay inside during the second fire alarm. In a less serious event, if I were to know I was going to break my leg on my next run, I would either not go on the run, or simply take precaution when doing so. As a person who likes to be prepared for almost everything in life, precognition predetermines faith. If you were to "not like" your future, you could easily take certain measures to change that circumstance. Many people may argue that having precognition would be nearly impossible given that the decisions you make everyday determine your future, however having your whole future planned out before making any tough decisions would be pretty cool, and honestly stress relieving. For example, imagine being stuck between two of your top colleges, having precognition enables you to see your future. Are you truly happy at the school you're going to be at? Having a super power as simple as super speed may by fun and help you at sports, but it wouldn’t necessarily help you in the long run. Having precognition is practical in the fact that it could benefit yourself and others.

If I were to have a superpower, I would choose the ability of superspeed which would be given to me by wearing a special ring that only I can take off. The ability of superspeed allows me to run as fast as the speed of light but I can also control how fast I’m going in order to blend in with all other humans. This power would allow me to get to wherever I want, whenever I want since I would be able to travel so quickly. For example, if I was sleep deprived and decided to sleep in a bit, I would be able to get ready in a matter of minutes and get to school in less than a few seconds so I would almost never be late anywhere. Also, I could easily be a varsity runner on the track team breaking almost every school record on the way, winning national championships. Since it would be a bit suspicious if I won everything, I would occasionally run slow at times but when it matters, I can make myself faster than anyone near me. I would probably get a scholarship to college and maybe even play in the NFL as the fastest running back of all time breaking all records and making millions of dollars. I would rather choose this superpower than other powers like flying and teleportation since those are powers that you can’t really hide well, but since I’d be able to control the speed I run at, I would be able to rise to the top. Also, it would be pretty cool fighting in a war running at the enemy and absolutely destroying their forces and they would have no clue what was happening to them. Maybe one day I can pass it on to a child of mine to carry on my legacy.

If I could have any super power, I would choose the power of invisibility. In order to possess this power, I would have to hold onto a small crystal ball. The power of invisibility is most appealing to me because it gives me the opportunity to be anywhere I want without anyone knowing I am there. I would be able to get away with many things without any chance of getting caught. For example, I could rob a bank and become rich without anybody knowing that I committed the crime. I would also be able to know what others are saying about me, my friends and my family, in secret. The power of invisibility would allow me to attend private meetings perhaps held by large corporations or the government, and therefore give me insider knowledge that the common people are not supposed to know. I would choose this power over the ability to fly because we already have alternatives such as skydiving, parasailing, and riding an airplane which give a fairly similar effect as flying does. Initially, I was deciding between invisibility and mind-reading. However, I came to the conclusion that I would not want others reading my mind because one’s unspoken thoughts are the only guaranteed information nobody can possibly know about. I value my privacy, and thus chose to value others’ privacy (to a certain extent). In my eyes, the power of invisibility seems to be the most useful and enjoyable ability of all.

If i could have any super power, I would have the power to solve any problem. The item that would allow me to possess this power would be my glasses so i can see what the problem is. The ability to solve any problem would allow me to end major problems like world hunger or even currently the gun control problem because I would be able to have a answer. Also this can allow me to inhertially have any power because if a problem was i was weak i could become strong to solve my problem. The first thing i would do is solve problems on yahoo answers because i want to help other people by answering their desperate problems. As well as answer people problems that they write to the newspaper and i can be like "nope that not the answer this is how you can solve that problem" however by me solving problems, it can be ending up in bad cases. For example i can give a answer that may lead to someone's death. Also i could get killed by someone in the government for exposing secrets and mysteries that were unsolved like if aliens are real? or what is in area 451? also this means alot of people will bother me to solve their problems and i don't like to be bothered.

If I could have any superpower I would want a photographic memory or the ability to retain any and all information. This superpower would allow me to remember anything I say or read perfectly and I would be able to recall it at any time. I would also never forget anything that I saw of heard. This would allow me to do amazing in school and have a bunch of really good conversations because I would be able to recall any information. The one downside is that people might not want to talk to me because I have all the answers. This is also way better than many other powers because I would not be cut open by scientists because I would just been seen as super smart. I could also keep it on the down low which would also keep me from getting picked apart. The “jewelry” I would chose is a sort of tongue or inner mouth piercing because I could keep it hidden and I don’t have to take it out. I also would be less likely to lose it because it’s inside my mouth. Even though these piercings could interfere with my job, it wouldn’t matter because I would be so smart that no one would care about my piercing. Although i would be able to recall any information I encounter, i will still be able to learn and think like a normal person meaning i wouldn't be like a robot. I would be a human with the abilities of a limitless computer chip. Another downside is that i would not be able to unsee a traumatic event. If I saw someone brutally murdered, the image of their bloody body would be burned into my mind. I would not be able to feel the pain of a heartbreak or a broken bone. I will always remember hurtful words and times of sadness.

If I could have any super power, I would have the superpower for invisibility and for teleporting. I would use these superpowers through a ring (one ring for each power) and you have to be wearing the ring and can be used in any place. If I had these superpowers I would teleport and then go invisible to be places I’m not supposed to be or go to places far away to relax. I would also use the invisibility to see what people are saying about me behind my back and to see things I normally wouldn’t see. If I wanted to go somewhere to watch a sports game or another event, I could teleport there and be invisible so I would be able to spectate without spending money and time (traveling to the place). I could also use this when its in the middle of the school year or if its the winter, I could travel to anywhere and relax there or go somewhere warm. Being invisible during these situations would be good because I could take anything I want like food or products without being caught. Another thing I could use this for is cheating on exams, or knowing what teachers/employers are looking for because they might be talking to someone about it and not know I’m there. People can see my teleportation when I arrive to places despite being somewhere else recently but they wouldn’t be able to notice my invisibility.

If I could have any super power, I would choose the ability to go back in time, as in a time in my lifetime, so that I would be able to change something of my life. It would be a necklace that has a clock. This way I could fix mistakes in my life. For example if I procrastinated but I don't realize I procrastinated too much, then I could go back in time to start whatever I need to start earlier. Also, you could pretty much predict future events, and buy any sort of asset when it was cheap. I would focus on fixing whatever decisions in my life were life changing, like what class I took or college I would go to. (Or maybe I would learn that those events aren't as life changing as they seem). With this power I could retire early, and also not have to worry or regret stuff as much.

telepathy is the most desirable super power I could imagine having for so many reasons. I would use my power selfishly to attain power, money and if I wanted, fame. I could read someone’s mind and listen to their bank account information or any smart ideas they have for business start-ups. I would build up my empire from there with those ideas I collect from others and I would not have to worry about money because I have access to the Kardashians bank. I don’t need invisibility or the ability to fly to get into someone’s account when I have all of the information I need to know. Basically, I will control the world with my bazajillion dollar empire, because people around me think too loud. Rebecca
